The mayor of Las Condes, Joaquín Lavín, assured that there is a “second wave” of coronavirus in the eastern part of the Metropolitan Region and pointed out that in his opinion it is necessary to establish a new quarantine in his commune.
Las Condes went into total quarantine on the night of Thursday, March 26 and left the confinement, after three weeks, on Thursday, April 16.
According to Minsal’s 16th Epidemiological Report Covid-19, published this Tuesday with figures until May 10, the commune shows a total of 738 accumulated cases. It also presents 291 current cases, 287 active cases and an incidence rate of 86.8 active cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
During an interview with Canal 13’s central newscast, Mayor Lavín said that “we are fully experiencing what in some countries has been called the second wave.”
According to the communal chief, this situation is caused by “a mixture of things”, including how contagious the virus is and the fact that it is affecting vulnerable areas where overcrowding is greatest. In addition, he maintained that there was a “relaxation” of people upon leaving the mandatory confinement.
Lavín acknowledged that a new quarantine is necessary in his commune.
“I do not know if total,” he said.
He also warned that the health system in the capital is reaching a “risky” level of emergency bed occupancy. “The time may come and it may be now that one says: look, in the Metropolitan Region we are going to have to make a total or almost total confinement,” he said.
The mayor made these statements based on data that he had previously commented on social networks and that account for a similar curve of cases in Lo Barnechea, Las Condes, Vitacura and Providencia.
