The mayor of Colchane, Javier García, requested respect for the inhabitants of his commune after it was one of the five places where he won the Rejection in the plebiscite.
In this town of the Tarapaca Region, the Rejection achieved 74.06% and the Approval 25.94% according to what was reported by the Servel, being together with Las Condes, Lo Barnechea, Vitacura and Antarctica the only five communes in where this option triumphed.
Through the Facebook account of the Municipality of Colchane, the mayor asked “respect for the expression of popular will that our residents manifested this October 25 in the plebiscite of approval or rejection.”
“The insults propagated by social networks demonstrate the level of classism and racism of the Chilean population towards the native peoples,” said the mayor.
“Our people have been reviled for exercising their right to decide, with irreproducible comments, full of hatred and contempt for our worldview and reality as an ancient and millennial people,” he added.
The mayor pointed out that “in a society that is valued as democratic, expressions that censor the free expression of the exercise of popular sovereignty of a certain commune cannot be tolerated.”
“It is the duty of all those who call themselves democrats to defend the free expression of the Colchaninos and respect their results even if it is adverse to the national majority, since it is inherent in the democratic spirit to which they say they belong and defend,” he said.
“It is valid to question the reason for the preference of the Colchaninos, but in the same way the foundations of the arguments that make this criticism must be questioned, in all of them we see that a racist and class approach prevails, of denial of the expression of the other”, added.
Finally, the mayor indicated that “Chile begins a new stage and cannot start on such a bad footing, giving itself the freedom to trample on the dignity of the Colchane commune, which was simply expressed at the polls and whose decision must be respected. This should be an alert, since, under no circumstances should the drafting of the new Magna Carta be allowed to be built with these seeds of discrimination and hatred. If not, it will be another exercise in covering up participation, where again the native peoples they will be marginalized. “
