March, the key month: the deadline that Piñera would have agreed with Mario Desbordes in a reserved appointment at La Moneda

The permanence of the Minister of Defense, Mario Desbordes, in the cabinet already has a deadline and the deadlines begin to clear. The Secretary of State held on Wednesday a reserved meeting with President Sebastián Piñera, where they would have addressed the future scenario, marked by the constituent process, a loaded electoral calendar and calls from the same ranks of National Renovation for Desbordes to become the party presidential letter.

According to government sources who learned about the content of the meeting with the President, there was indeed talk of the continuation of the former RN in the cabinet, and it was agreed that the issue would be addressed again in March.

Meanwhile, Desbordes will continue to focus on defense, a portfolio that accommodates him and to which he arrived in July in the change of cabinet decided by Piñera to lower the decibels to the internal tension in Chile Vamos.

However, March 2021 is a key month, because it is the prelude to a series of elections, such as the municipal elections and the April Constitutional Convention election, and where RN has a lot to play for.

Interviewed Thursday at Radio La Clave, Desbordes said that he has no plans to leave the government immediately. “I’m doing a job that I really like,” he said. However, he assumed that “effectively in March you have to sit down and talk with the board to see where we serve better.”

To face the heavy electoral calendar that is coming, in RN they are betting on the figure of Desbordes, since he is one of the leaders who came out stronger in the center-right of this constituent plebiscite process, given his role in the agreement of November 15, his option for approval and his imprint for a more social, center and pragmatic right.

The intention of Desbordes would then be to lead the municipal and constituent campaigns on April 11 and prepare for the presidential primary of Chile Vamos on July 4. Prior to this last date, RN also has to make internal decisions at the presidential level, because the position of Desbordes has reached such a point that this week a group of 8 deputies, together with the mayor of Santiago, Felipe Alessandri, and the president of the RN Youth, Javier Molina, signed a letter requesting that the current Defense Minister be a presidential candidate in the next elections.

In the opinion of the signatories, the results of the plebiscite left a clear lesson, which is why “politicians connected with citizens are needed, capable of empathizing with the people and who urgently attend to their demands” and Desbordes is “the leadership that Chile needs for the times to come. Away from dogmas and connected with reality. “
