Manuel Merino resigns the presidency of Peru 6 days after taking office
“The unfortunate events that occurred in the last hours aggravate the crisis that we were already going through,” said the now former president.
Manuel Merino resigned this Sunday to the interim presidency of Peru six days after taking office, after the serious social and political pressure after the removal of Martín Vizcarra.
According to the now former president, “I must announce that the ministers will continue in their positions until the uncertainty of the current moment in which we live can be resolved.”
“I present my irrevocable resignation to the office of President of the Republic”he continued.
On the massive demonstrations throughout the country after his appointment, Merino emphasized that “The legitimate protest also has groups interested in producing chaos and violence.”
“The unfortunate events that occurred in the last hours aggravate the crisis that we were already going through, the one that produced the presidential vacancy days ago”he added.
It also recognized that “the presidency was a challenge that I accepted and did not seek”added Merino, complementing that “all of Peru is in mourning” after the death of two protesters.
Remember that on the last day of demonstrations, two deceased people and reports of violent repression by the police.
Merino asked that justice investigate and determine responsibilities, asserting that “all Peru is in mourning.”
