The President of Peru, Manuel Merino, who was in office on an interim basis after the removal of former president Martín Vizcarra, submitted his “irrevocable” resignation after six days in office.
Merino urged “peace and unity” amid the massive demonstrations that were generated after Vizcarra’s departure and his entry into office, which left two young people dead on Saturday night and dozens injured.
“I will do my best to guarantee the constitutional process, Peru deserves to move forward,” he said.
The now former president announced his resignation through a televised message to the country, just minutes after Congress urged the president to resign while convened an extraordinary plenary session to find a constitutional solution to the crisis and find a successor to the resigned president.
This day the spokespersons of the nine political parties represented in Congress (or called the Board of Spokespersons) met, who should evaluate the political future.
