The former Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, referred to the constitutional accusation against him and that weighs on his management by the Minsal in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic in Chile.

In an interview with El Mercurio, the doctor said that the libel “is not a criticism” of his person, but that, in his opinion, it is a matter of the Government. According to Dr. Mañalich, in his case, everything is about “politically accuse everyone who has been in this government.” Evidently, he said, “there is an effort to destroy Piñera’s legacy.”

The former head of Minsal assures that “there is a general political issue here, which is that there is obviously an opposition that is interested in staining any management that has taken place in the President’s government. “And this is part of that menu that was done wrong,” he added, pointing out that he wants to leave a “trail of doubt and mistrust regarding the actions that the Government has taken and continues to take.”

Mañalich defends himself and commented to the morning that during his administration “not only was there no intention to manipulate, but the intention was to go beyond what Epidemiology said”, and that, for the former minister, is what is part of the problem “Establish a kind of doubt regarding what Epidemiology informed us, establish additional information channels and ask the Comptroller’s Office, which is what I believe causes a certain turbulence within the ministry, to conduct an audit on the registry system that had epidemiology. “

In addition, he ruled out that decisions such as dynamic quarantines have been made with incomplete information, stating that “the decisions that were made I think show they have been adequate”, insisting that there are countries that are applying them because “the other type of quarantines, in vulnerable places, they are not possible, they fail completely. “

Although he did not answer whether the prosecution is politicized, Jaime Mañalich assures that there is “inappropriate conduct, to say the same thing, that in a de-formalized investigation there is a massive leak of data on what is being investigated, and that produces a damage to research. “

Asked about the position of the prosecutor’s office when pointing out that it implemented a sui generis system for data collection, in the investigation carried out after the complaint made by Mayor Daniel Jadue against him, the undersecretaries Paula Daza and Arturo Zúñiga as well as against President Sebastián Piñera, the former head of the Ministry of Health pointed out that “the sui generis and unusual thing about what the prosecution maintains is that in Chile or in the world there must have been a perfect way to fight this pandemic, when that is very far from reality”.

“Here the sui generis for me is that we have a system of treatment of criminal legal issues in which litigating through the press has become a custom,” he said.

“We found a system, as clearly documented by the Comptroller’s Office, that had tremendous imperfections, and the imperfections were centered on the fact that the Epivigila system is completely dependent on the information entered by those who must make the mandatory notification of infectious diseases (ENO), and we came to the realization that this was not happening properly, that not all cases were being recorded; So we had a difference in cases between what was reported in Epivigila and the suspects in the clinical centers. That is why we made a correction in May, regarding the positive cases that had a positive PCR test but that had not been uploaded to the Epivigila platform, ”explained Jaime Mañalich.
