This Saturday, Germany saw anti-mask protesters trying to break into the building of the Reichstag, the seat of the parliament of that country. Some of the participants, many of whom displayed far-right slogans, carried German flags, but not only the current one, but also that of the German Empire.
In the middle of the mob, one of the protesters stood out for using the Chilean flag as a “cape”, trying to outmaneuver the police and being repelled by them. The moment was captured in a video, published on social networks.
Several hundred protesters forced the barriers to climb the stairs of the Reichstag building, Agence France-Presse found.
At the last minute the security forces prevented them from entering by using aerosols to disperse the crowd and detained several people.
The images created outrage in Germany.
The Reichstag, where German deputies meet in plenary session, is a very symbolic place in Germany.
The building and its famous dome were burned in 1933 by the Nazis, an act that had the objective of attacking German democracy.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel called the images “disgraceful”, while Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that “the extreme right-wing violence during Saturday’s demonstration in Berlin rightly scared and outraged many people”.
