The President finished his speech and left the press conference, despite the fact that the speech of the President of the Senate was missing. This last authority accused machismo: “I don’t know if I would have done that to a man, but several things crossed my mind,” he lashed out.

Simply they left her alone. This is how the episode experienced at noon this Friday in La Moneda by the president of the Senate, Adriana Muñoz, could be summarized.

The event was recorded in a conference offered at the Government Palace after an appointment by President Sebastián Piñera with members of the different powers of state to address the crisis of violence in La Araucanía.

The President was the first to speak at the press conference to refer to the current situation in the area. However, as soon as he finished his speech, he left the stage and together with the other participants turned his back on the activity, despite the fact that Muñoz’s intervention was still pending.

When this last authority began his speech, the Head of State stopped a few moments to talk behind her, with the helmsmen of the Chamber, Diego Paulsen; of the Council of Defense of the State, Juan Antonio Peribonio; and from the Supreme Court, Guillermo Silva.

After a few seconds, Piñera and his companions simply filed out of the patio where the activity was taking place. Muñoz must have addressed the press alone.

The only one to return to hear what the PPD parliamentarian had to say was Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado.

Despite the fact that the President frequently leaves the press conferences once his speeches in La Moneda have concluded, this time his actions unleashed various criticisms. Mainly, due to the characteristics of this morning’s meeting, in which it was intended to give a sign of unity between the powers of the State.

The moment was recorded in a video that was widely disseminated on social networks.

Muñoz accuses snub and machismo

For the president of the Senate, what happened corresponds to a slight for machismo.

In conversation with BioBioChile, the parliamentarian explains that she took what happened “with surprise.” “When I review (the videos) I thought it could be a slight for having a different position than the President (Piñera) during the conversation in the morning, or for being a woman ”.

“I don’t know if I would have done that to a male president (of the Senate), but several things crossed my mind. I don’t know which of all could be the basis for having left me alone at the press conference ”, he reflects.

Thus, he says he lived the episode “with bewilderment.” “In the end I decided to speak anyway because I had to raise my position in light of everything the President had said.”

“By the way (it is) a slight, I am the second authority in the country, regardless of who the person is,” he lashes out.

Along these lines, he says that “it is good” that sexist situations like this occur in high places, because “They mark the different treatment that exists between men and women.”

“That is very good that it remains as a lesson, as a learning, so that they do not happen again.”

Muñoz said he had not received any calls from La Moneda after what happened.
