About 45 minutes exposed Pablo Longueira before the extended political commission of his party. His participation in that instance -which took place from 6.30 pm, via Zoom-, was for explain his comeback in politics which was marked by his decision to openly say that he is for the Approval before the plebiscite of October 25, a position that is a minority within the unionism, which is institutionally for the Rejection.
On the occasion, the former senator addressed another of his decisions: his intentions to be a candidate for the election of constituents in case he wins the Approval and also to preside over the UDI. The latter in view of the internal elections that the directive set this Monday for the December 12th.
His intervention -which was private- occurred in a scenario in which last week most of the militants were surprised by his crusade and, even, there were several who, during party meetings, were upset and uncomfortable because of the way he communicated it and because in his opinion the institutional position of the party is weakened.
According to several representatives present at the meeting, Longueira in his speech stated that “We are walking, friends, divided to a plebiscite in which we are not going to draw more than 30% as we were going and there is no stone on stone, that is what I want to tell you. So, I want us to understand that we are in a divided plebiscite and, the worst that can happen to us is that they do not get 30%, they are not going to get it “, adding that “There they are going to tell us that 70% of Chileans want to start from scratch, that is the risk we are at.”
In that sense, and according to the same sources, the former president asked: “How can you believe that I do not want to rescue the best of this Constitution, is that you know the level we are at impacts me. You are for the no, not from zero, I am for the yes not from zero “. And I add: “So, what we have to do is that (what they are for the Rejection) we have to explain that it is because we do not want it to start from zero, and those of us who go for the Approval will say no from zero. What unites us, not starting from scratch ”.
In this way, in the face of the questions that arose in the previous days, Longueira stated: “The point is that I do not come as a messiah, I come to tell you a strategy that unites us.”
The former senator stressed that “I would like the young people of the right, in whatever parties they are, to go more for the Approve than for a backpack to be for the Rejection.” In that sense, according to those present, the “colonel” urged that those who are for that last position not vote.
He reaffirmed his intentions to be a constituent and that he is working on a proposed constitutional reforms containing a “Great chapter” of “social rights”.
At the end of his speech, some parliamentarians asked to speak to express their position on the matter. Like last week, the majority remained in favor of Rejection and Longueira’s call did not attract support. The party “did not move the needle,” they noted. Of course, in the community they emphasize that the event -which continued at the close of this edition- took place in a good atmosphere, without tension and respect.
For example, according to present, the deputy Javier Macaya asked Longueira reconsider your stance and He told him that the election of constituents was not an environment of consensus due to the disposition of the center-left; while his pair Patricio melero He listed the reasons why the political times of today are different and we must remain in the Rejection, among them, defending that the left is not willing to compromise and that the center does not exist.
Deputy Jose Ramon Barros he asked Longueira about his aspirations to lead the UDI. Longueira replied: “I will compete if they want me to compete, it is not a problem, I have always done it.” However, he added that he was looking for unity and that he was willing to be a deputy secretary of a list if that contributed.
