La Araucanía Prosecutor’s Office reports reopening of investigation into the death of Erica Hagan

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office of La Araucanía reported this Friday that resolved the reopening of the investigation into the murder of American student Erica Hagan, occurred on September 5, 2014 inside the Colegio Bautista de Temuco.

Through a statement, the prosecution noted that “a team of prosecutors specialized in violent crimes and gender violence was entrusted to carry out the procedures that are conducive to clarifying the facts under investigation, determination of possible perpetrators, either as direct authors, accomplices or accessories to the crime under investigation or who have participated in direct acts to obstruct the investigation ”.

The Public Ministry indicated that for the reopening of the investigation, the request made by the victim’s mother, Regina O’Neal, was “specially considered”, which was reiterated last Thursday in a brief presented by his lawyer.

This specifically requests “to reopen the investigation and carry out new proceedings based on the analysis of the existing antecedents in the investigation folder.”

In the statement, it is stated that “The Public Ministry considers that the circumstance of there being any line not sufficiently addressed, as stated by the petitioner, warrants taking actions that ensure respect for the fundamental rights of the victim, such as effective access to justice.”

It is added that “in the same sense, the opinion of the murdered student’s mother has been specially considered, regarding questioning the status of victim of the Bautista Educational Foundation, for which reason today the Prosecutor’s Office filed an appeal for reconsideration challenging the admissibility of the complaint filed by said entity, who does not hold the status of victim with respect to the facts investigated ”.

The school caretaker Domingo Cofré was the only suspect in the murder, but in December 2015 he was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
