A mysterious metal “obelisk” that was found buried in the remote western united states desert has ignited the imaginations of UFO watchers, conspiracy theorists and fans of the late British filmmaker Stanley Kubrick all over the world.
The bright triangular pillar, protruding approximately more than three meters from the red rocks of the southern state of Utah, was discovered last Wednesday by local officials.
Upon landing to investigate, crew members from the Utah Department of Public Safety found “a metal monolith installed in the ground,” but “No obvious indication of who could have put the monolith there”.
“It is illegal install structures or works of art without authorization on public land administered by the federal government, no matter what planet it is from, ”the agency warned in a press release with a touch of irony on Monday.
News of the discovery quickly went viral on the internet, and many noted the similarity of the object to strange alien monoliths that unleashes enormous advances in human progress in classic works of science fiction such as the famous Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, 1968.
Others commented on the discovery during a turbulent year in which the world was hit by the covid-19 pandemic, optimistically speculating that it could serve a completely different function.
“This is the ‘reset’ button for 2020. Can anyone quickly press it?” joked a user of the social network Instagram.
Since the officials refuse to reveal the location of the object fearing hordes of onlookers approach the remote desert, an online race has also begun to geolocate the “obelisk” using the surrounding rock formations.
Bret Hutchings, the pilot who flew over the obelisk, speculated that the item had been planted by “some new trend artist.”
Some observers noted the resemblance of the object to the avant-garde work of John McCracken, an American artist who lived for a time in nearby New Mexico and died in 2011.
