Journalist Yerko Avalos reported this Sunday that he resigned from Televisión Nacional de Chile (TVN) to run as a candidate for mayor for the commune of Salamanca, in the Coquimbo region.
The announcement came through social networks, where the communicator assured that “there are many who have requested it from different sectors and I cannot help knowing that our land needs a change.”
Salamanca, with a population of less than 30 thousand inhabitants, is governed by the independent mayor Fernando Gallardo Pereira and has six councilors.
“Thanks to my experience in the media, I have got to know the reality of Chile in depth,” added the television face, who also worked for Mega and La Red.
Ávalos affirmed that he has “the energy, the ideas, the support of top-level professionals with whom we aspire to turn Salamanca into a city with international projection, which provides prosperity to all its inhabitants.”
His taste for politics is nothing new. In 2016, he showed his intentions to participate in the parliamentary elections in a deputy quota, while he was a member of Amplitud. However, these did not prosper.
“I really want to be a deputy, but I must also understand that I function within a political party and we will have to define at some point, not yet now. I am going to look for a democratic way to be able to be the visible face of the party, but for now my support will be in the 5 mayoral candidates that Amplitud leads in the Region, ”he told El Día.
Still, he ran for election under the wing of his party, although he was not elected due to the drag system. He obtained about eight thousand votes.
Municipal elections are expected to take place on April 21.
For now, Ávalos is in the pre-candidacy stage, so he is gathering signatures and registering with the Electoral Service. Its motto is “Salamanca woke up”, alluding to the phrase that became popular in Chile during the social outbreak of October 2019.
