President-elect Joe Biden said Monday that Donald Trump’s appointees at the Pentagon they were stalling the transition and cautioned that the United States faces security risks as a result.
After he and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris met with their transition teams on national security, Biden said that politicians appointed at the Pentagon, as well as the Office of Management and Budget, had put up “obstacles” to the transition.
“At this time, we are simply not getting all the information we need from the outgoing administration in key areas of national security.”said the president-elect after the briefing.
In that sense, he stated that he wanted to have a “clear idea” on the strength of US troops stationed around the world.
“We need full visibility into ongoing budget planning at the Department of Defense and other agencies to avoid any possibility of confusion (…) that our adversaries can try to exploit “Biden explained.
Trump has refused to acknowledge his defeat in the November 3 election, which Biden won by some seven million votes and by 306-232 delegates to the Electoral College, wielding a fraud that could never prove.
The Trump administration has raised concerns by changing senior Pentagon officials after the election, including the firing of Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who had been distanced from the president’s decision to use force against unarmed anti-racist protesters earlier this year.
New Acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller said the outgoing administration had agreed with Biden’s team to pause briefings for the holiday season, a claim that incoming officials they qualified as false.
The last-minute installation in the Pentagon by Donald Trump of some of his faithful comes amid high tensions with Iran, whom the Republican mogul blamed for a rocket attack on the US embassy in Iraq before the anniversary in January of the assassination of a senior Iranian general by Washington in Baghdad.
