The Renca municipal council, headed by Mayor Claudio Castro, approved by 7 votes in favor and one abstention (6 councilors in favor plus the mayor’s vote, 1 abstention, 1 councilor absent), the name change of Avenida Jaime Guzmán by Avenida Dorsal that corresponds to its denomination of origin.

This petition, which arises from the request of various neighborhood units, was presented by 77 signatories with a support list of 86 other people. It should be noted that among the arguments that support the request is the survey carried out by the sponsoring social organization “Colectivo Poesía y Territorio de Renca”, in which 1,022 people participated, of which 97.2% voted in favor of changing the name of the Street. Other signatory groups also conducted surveys with similar results.

Another of the justifications presented for requesting this change is related to the fact that the current name corresponds to a character in the history of our country who has no direct relationship with the commune, or with its history and identity, in addition to corresponding to a person linked a civic-military dictatorship and whose memory provokes division among the inhabitants of the commune.

In the instance, the mayor Claudio Castro, appreciated that different organizations have been listened to, which on several occasions had proposed to recover the original name of this avenue.

“This name change comes from the community itself, from community groups and from the Neighborhood Councils that entered the Municipality with a letter with thousands of signatures, followed by a series of conversations we had with the Council of Civil Society Organizations ( COSOC), until today’s approval in the Municipal Council. There was a need to return the original name to this emblematic axis and to leave behind figures that produced divisions in the community and that were not related to the identity and history of a grudge, “he said. .

The busy road that connects with important arteries such as the Costanera Norte, the Central Highway and the Apóstol Santiago and General Velásquez avenues, will complete its name change next week.
