“Omissions and serious errors”. This was part of what the president of the Medical College, Izkia Siches, reported on the handling of the coronavirus pandemic by the former Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, before the Commission that analyzes the origin of the constitutional accusation against the former head of Minsal.

The doctor was very critical of the actions of the Minsal during the period in which Mañalich was in charge, accusing that experts were not listened to and that there was “reckless recklessness” in the management of the disease.

In the opinion of the president of Colmed, in the context in which the pandemic occurred, where Chile was facing a social and political crisis “The Ministry of Health, led by Jaime Mañalich, further weakened institutional credibility, precisely at a time when we needed unity, collaboration and social peace; Despite this, there was a refusal to collaborate with scientific societies, unions, universities and mayors, and a closed management of the pandemic was chosen ”.

“Perhaps the most profound damage has to do with the damage to public faith, to which, from our perspective, Minister Jaime Mañalich, contributed”Siches added.

Regarding the criticism of the deceased counting system and the doubts regarding the figures that were initially produced, the doctor pointed out that “what is not understandable in his account (of Mañalich) and lacks the minimum logic, is how an accessory system set up by the Minsal was not conservative in its analysis. From that sense, if they had the data from the laboratories, which was what allowed them to know the total universe, skipping the Epivigilila platform, how more than 30 thousand cases could be ignored. In our opinion, this is an intrepid measure by the Minsal and we believe that it is one of the points that must be thoroughly investigated to see and clarify whether there was intent or intent in the concealment of real figures.

Along these lines, in the opinion of Siches, during the handling of the pandemic during the period in which Mañalich was in charge, “There were serious and avoidable errors and omissions, contradicting the opinion of experts and established procedures.”

To add that during that period by the Minsal “They would have acted recklessly in handling the pandemic, in handling data, in making early openings and in dynamic quarantines.”

Likewise, about the fact that the voice of the experts was not heard or their suggestions for the management of Covid-19 were applied, the health professional indicated that “There could be negligence and / or inexperience by not following the recommendations of the advisory council and abandoning the strategy that allows control of the pandemic.

On the other hand, Siches also insisted on the importance of having a good identification, traceability and testing system. “The only form of containment is to cut the chain of transmission and the only way of that is to detect the cases and isolate them, there is no other way, there is no magic, there is no other strategy. Why in our country is it still a strategy that cannot be assembled? It is a question that from Colmed we have not been able to resolve ”, he indicated.

This Thursday the parliamentary body must vote on the final report on the accusation presented by deputies from the Frente Amplio, PC, PR and PPD, so that later the libel is seen in the room next Tuesday.
