“A few hours have passed since the attack we suffered with my partner Esteban Sánchez … I still can’t get out of my mind his screams of pain, the noise of the shots, the profuse bleeding from his multiple wounds, my pain from the shot in the arm, the truck that crashed from side to side because our tires had blown out, in short, the uncertainty of knowing if we would get out alive ”.

Thus begins a comment made by the TVN journalist Iván Núñez on his Instagram account where he addresses the attack that he and the cameraman Esteban Sánchez suffered in Tirúa, Biobío Region.

The incident occurred on Saturday, in the San Ramón crossing sector, at kilometer 32 of Route P-72S, when a group of unknown persons shot the press team that was mobilizing in a van. The couple was on their way to an interview with the leader of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), Héctor Llaitul.

The cameraman was the one who got the brunt of the attack: he lost sight in one eye after sustaining an injury. In addition, he suffered multiple other injuries. Núñez, for his part, ended up with an arm injury.

As reported by this medium, moments before the shooting, the journalistic team was confronted by a group of people who they questioned the interview they were going to carry out, as well as Llaitul’s role with the rest of the Mapuche communities in the area.

“I regret and will regret for life that he got the worst of it. I would have gladly put myself in his place. Many and many of you do not know him and do not know the value he has, his talent, creativity and the eternal desire to do quality journalism “, commented the TVN journalist about his partner.

“We were indeed victims of a terrorist attack, this is not common crime. There was no attempted robbery, or anything like that. They shot us to kill. In my hand I have the 9mm bullet that hit me in the arm. Esteban received 5 of those. He is miraculously alive, because he is a fighter, but also because of the help of that anonymous couple who got us into his car and took us to Cañete and because of the efforts of the health personnel who treated him urgently, “he added.

Likewise, the professional stated that “journalism sometimes requires us to take risks. The response to this cowardly attack cannot be to retreat and stop reporting. No one can be forced to go to difficult areas. I’ll keep going ”.

The Ministry of the Interior filed a complaint in the case to be part of the investigation that will be carried out by the PDI and the Biobío Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
