The Deputy Iván Flores (DC) did not close the door to a presidential candidacy, but affirmed that the priority of citizens today is not to talk about that election, which will be in November 2021 and that some parties returned to the public debate after the constituent plebiscite last Sunday.
The legislator responded in this way to the regional directive of the Christian Democracy in Los Ríos – an area that he represents and of which he was its first mayor (2007-2009) -, which proposed him as presidential since they see it as the political letter necessary to “assume leadership of the country.”
Through a letter they stressed that “Iván Flores has shown courage and courage to lead Chile in times of uncertainty “, in direct allusion to the attitude shown by the deputy in full social explosion, which began on October 18, 2019, when he served as president of the Lower House.
Today is not yet the time for presidential candidacies, nor to close doors, but to listen to the public, but really! This is my response to the demand raised by the political base of my region of Los Ríos! That! Hugs to all! pic.twitter.com/3XtCRqSfhh

Through a video posted on his social networks, Flores stated that “it is time to listen to the public” and specified that “We politicians have to understand that the priorities today are being set by citizens and not personal or party interests.”
Focused on the constituent process, he argued that there are still “to resolve some gaps with respect to the Constitutional Convention: it is not yet resolved how we are going to involve the independents, the native peoples or other minorities who today propose to participate in a particular way; or how we are going to deal with unity (in opposition) the elections to regional governors, mayors and councilors, who are the first line of attention to citizens, we must not forget the territories “.
However, “other questions and scenarios that need to be cleared before making such a transcendent and complex decision ” as the presidential: “Are we available to seek political agreement to make structural changes; how are we going to face the pandemic and the post-pandemic with all the social and economic blows; how are we going to face the problem of violence and this critical situation of social coexistence that we begin to feel? “, he explained.
All in all, he stressed that his current “political goal” is to make the leap to the Senate as representative of said region, but he acknowledged that “he does not close any doors” and, as he emphasized before, “everything will depend on whether there is generosity and political clarity, and especially if there is unity to face the great challenges.”
