Italy detected this Sunday a first case of contagion of the new strain of coronavirus, first identified in the United Kingdom and that could be more contagious, after deciding to suspend flights from this country.
In a statement released in the evening, the Ministry of Health specifies that a patient infected by the new strain was identified in Italy at the Celio military hospital in Rome.
This center revealed “The genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from an individual who tested positive for the variant [del nuevo coronavirus] found in recent weeks in the UK “, says the statement.
The patient had recently returned from this country by plane and he and those close to him are in quarantine, according to the same source.
Earlier, Italy had announced the suspension of flights from the United Kingdom.
“The United Kingdom launched an alert about a new form of covid-19 that would be the result of a mutation of the virus. As a government we have a duty to protect Italians and for that reason “we are” going to sign with the Minister of Health a decree to suspend flights to the UK“Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs, wrote on his Facebook account.
“I have signed a new order blocking flights from the UK and prohibits the entry into Italy of people who have been there in the last 14 days, “said the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, in a statement.
“Anyone who is in Italy from that territory must undergo a test, antigen or molecular,” added the statement, which called for “the greatest possible prudence.”
The very brief text of the order specifies that the decision takes effect this Sunday, but without indicating the time, and that it will be valid until January 6.
The decision came the day after the British Prime Minister, Boris johnson, will announce the reconfinement of London and parts of South East England until December 30.
The British president linked the rebound in covid-19 infections in those areas with the new strain of coronavirus discovered there, which, according to him, could be up to 70% more contagious.
For that reason, the World Health Organization asked its European members this Sunday to “strengthen their controls.”
