“I avoid at all costs having to come to that, because it really is the worst thing that can happen to you, to reach a moment where you have to use physical force to defend yourself. But I did learn to be attentive to the environment, to be alert, “says Andrea Aristegui about her ability in taekwondo.

The face of Mega news has practiced this martial art of Korean origin since she was a child and a few years ago she said she was a black belt.

Now he delved into the subject in the space that María Luisa Godoy broadcasts on instagram where Aristegui made his balance on this difficult 2020, talked about his family and how they lived the extensive quarantine (“There were certain episodes of tension, ‘Hey, but Why didn’t you wash the dishes, if it was your turn …?!

Meanwhile, this was his story about the teakwondo:

“I was always an athlete, when I was a girl I liked to experiment, I went through artistic gymnastics, athletics, volleyball, when I was in school I was involved in everything. And my dad, very visionary, said ‘I need to give Andrea tools so that she can defend herself against a world where all women…’ Well, we could be talking about that for a long time. “But let him be safe.”

“He had done martial arts at some point in his life, so he took me to try a taekwondo class. I must have been ten or eleven years old and I liked it, contrary to what you might think. Usually little girls like ballet or other sports activities better.

“I really liked it because it had something like ceremonial, like discipline, and I started doing taekwondo and from then on I trained for years. Later, when I got into college, I quit. Then I came back, because it has always been something that fulfills me a lot in sports and spiritually. But also, with this plus that it allowed me to feel safer to walk on the street. And that has been super good, because I feel that I have an attitude that has allowed me to avoid certain risks on the street.

“They ask me (he refers to the comments of Instagram users who followed the live broadcast) if I fight or have I had to defend myself. Not fortunately. And I avoid having to come to that at all costs, because it really is the worst thing that can happen to one, to reach a moment where one has to use physical force to defend oneself. But I did learn to be aware of the environment, to be alert.

“I am always very alert when I walk in the street and I have been in situations where I have said ‘mmm, better to move, better to cross, better to enter a business and stay a while’. In this I have been able to avoid certain risky situations and I hope that I never have to use the knowledge I have of martial arts, because there is always a very great risk. One can know a lot, but if they take a gun from you, you don’t have much else to do and I would never risk such a situation.

“Taekwondo, as it is a Korean martial art, we are talking about millenary studies and within what training implies there is a lot of spirituality. Taekwondo means path of feet and hands and has very much in mind the power of the mind, of self-control, of discipline.

“Another of the beautiful things that my teacher taught me when I was little is humility. When one enters the training room we are all the same, there are no differences. It does not matter if you are older, if you have more money, the position you have. We are all the same and your hierarchy is given by your knowledge in martial arts.

“You have to be very humble in front of your superiors, if you are just leaving you have to earn your degree, anyway. So that respect for others, that humility that here one is not the most chorito or anything is something that one can apply in life and that is super wise to move in life in general.

“These are things I learned in taekwondo. Self-control for me has been super important in my career. Sometimes you have super tough situations on the air, of tension, I’ve done political journalism. So being able to control oneself in the face of an adverse situation is one of the tools that I got from martial arts and it has helped me a lot ”.
