During this Monday a session of the commission that reviews the constitutional accusation against the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, took place, an instance where the Minister of Defense, Mario Desbordes, intervened.
On the occasion, Desbordes answered questions from deputy Fernando Meza (IND) and deputy Jenny Álvarez (PS), who consulted on the arguments presented by the defense of Minister Pérez in the answer to the accusation against him.
In it, let us remember, He had stated that the Carabineros does not depend on the Interior portfolio when the country is under a constitutional state of exception, an issue that brought with it a blow to the Government, particularly in the Defense portfolio.
In this regard, Mario Desbordes, head of the latter portfolio and former president of National Renovation, indicated that it is an interpretation made by Pérez’s lawyers, which he does not share, but that he does respect, and said that the Carabineros does not depend on Defense, but inland.
Likewise, Desbordes acknowledged that the country’s defense chiefs do not share what Pérez’s lawyers have pointed out, however, he said that they have not filed any complaints in this regard.
“The deputy Mr. Meza consults me, the president, the response given by the defense minister Víctor Pérez, well, it is a point of view that is obviously legitimate, an interpretation made by lawyers. I do not share it, and you have to be clear on that. I do not share it because I understand that the work of the Carabineros de Chile continues to depend on the Minister of the Interior, it does not depend on me “, said Desbordes.
Along these lines, he explained that the Carabinieri officials “do not depend on the Minister of Defense, they always depend on the Minister of the Interior and there is a joint work with the chiefs of the defense, there is no doubt and in that the defense is right, but not regarding public demonstrations, because we have said (…) that social demonstrations, public demonstrations, are not part of the tasks that the Armed Forces will be responsible for ”.
Finally the holder of Defense He argued that he did not attribute responsibility to Pérez, adding that, from his point of view, he and his defense have acted in good faith despite these contradictions.
