The National Plebiscite officially started outside the borders of Chile. At 08.22 am on Sunday, October 25 in distant New Zealand (going 16 hours ahead), a man – who was carrying a baby in his arms – deposited the first vote in the ballot box at the Chilean consular headquarters in Auckland.

Furthermore, it is the first time that a polling station has been set up in said city of the oceanic country. This is in addition to the one that already worked in the city of Wellington.

Total, 1,498 Chileans vote on the island. Of these, 764 will do so in Auckland and the remaining 734 in Wellington. A number not less, because according to the Consul María Fernanda Gómez, regarding the 2017 vote, there was “a significant increase in voters”.

The diplomatic official added that, regarding the situation of the pandemic in the country (which only registered 11 new cases this day), “we are following the local health regulations.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andres AllamandHe explained that except for two cases in Argentina (due to the health situation), the 65 tables abroad are enabled. “We have a completely normal situation, the problems that had arisen during the week have been cleared up and I think that we are going to have a generally normal vote.

The first count with the preliminary results of the voting abroad will be announced after the closing of tables in the country, at 8:00 p.m.
