Media in Europe have reported a controversial incident that occurred in Italy, where a doctor was arrested and accused of intentionally administering high doses of anesthetic drugs and neuromuscular blocking drugs, causing the death of two COVID-19 patients in March 2020.
The professional is Carlo Mosca, who was in charge of the emergency room of the Montichiari hospital, in the city of Brescia.
The arrest occurred last Monday and the doctor is currently charged with voluntary manslaughter. For now, he is being held under house arrest and has been suspended from the position he held at the medical center.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the events occurred in the third month of 2020, when the pandemic hit Italy and there was a collapse of the health system.
Two months later, the Italian police launched an investigation and collected information regarding the possibility that the deaths of some patients, which occurred in the hospital where Mosca was, they were due to criminal medical practices.
At that time the authorities reviewed the history of numerous patients who had died in that period from COVID-19, finding that in some cases there was a sudden deterioration in health, which was inexplicable.
After that, three bodies were exhumed and subjected to autopsies and toxicological investigations.
In one of them it was found that within the tissues there was presence of an anesthetic drug and another muscle relaxant, which are used frequently in intubation procedures of people.
However, they indicated, if these substances are used outside the procedure, and in high doses, they can determine the death of the patient.
Along with that, in the medical records of these deceased, the administration of those medications had not been reported, which evidenced suspicions around the doctor in charge of that unit.
However, at the end of 2020 a new precedent was added in the framework of the investigation, after a chat conversation that two nurses, in charge of Mosca, had during that period was revealed.
These read: – “Did he ask you to administer the drugs without intubating them? No, I’m killing them just because he wants to free the bed. “ – “I agree with you, this is crazy.”
“Mosca approached the staff members to agree on a suitable version of the story, even urging them to declare falsehood,” the judge said in the arrest warrant.
“Despite the fact that most of the health workers knew Mosca’s way of acting, with the administration of drugs to intubate without doing it and outside of any protocol or guideline, no one decided to report the chief physician before the April 23 complaint, nor did he report the facts to the competent health department, “he added.
For now, Mosca awaits the trial against him at home. He could spend the rest of his life in jail if found guilty of all three deaths.
