After a controversial vote by the municipal council held this Friday morning, UDI mayor Miguel Abdo became the new mayor of Estación Central, after Rodrigo Delgado left the direction of the municipality to assume as Minister of the Interior.

Abdo will sign the corresponding decree and will be sworn in as communal chief at 3:00 p.m.. The position will be held until April 2021.

As the councilors explained to Third, the election process began at 9:30 in the morning, via telematics, where Miguel Abdo (UDI) and Guillermo Flores (PPD) obtained the highest votes.

After taking a 10-minute break – requested by Councilor Felipe Zavala- the councilors continued with the second round, however, not all cast their vote. According to several of those present, Felipe Muñoz (Ind) did not respond to the call of the municipal secretary, so he did not vote, despite the fact that he was connected in the Zoom room.

Finally, Flores obtained 4 votes and Abdo 3 votes. The first required the support of 5 councilors to become mayor, a quorum that was not achieved due to Muñoz’s omission. Therefore, and as established by law, in the absence of an absolute majority, the councilor who obtained votes in the 2016 municipal election was the winner. So Miguel Abdo retained the municipal seat for unionism.

Zavala (PC) harshly criticized Councilor Muñoz, whom he blames for the triumph of Miguel Abdo. “Later he appeared pretending to be the one who had not been able to vote, but there was no reason to disappear and at this time it is justified that he had technical problems”, he annoyed Third.

“Felipe Muñoz, who pretends to be something more than he is today, acted by omission favoring the right in Central Station. In other words, it is responsible for the UDI to continue guiding the destinies of this commune towards precariousness, there is a deficiency and lack of green areas, public safety ”he added.

Councilor Robinson Valdebenito came out shouting: “Traitors, traitors. Felipe Muñoz has betrayed the people, he voted for the right wing, he abstained. This commune is still in the hands of the right because of Felipe Muñoz ”.

In this line, the councilor of the PS, Angélica Cid, published on his Twitter account: “Today again personal interests prevailed over the good of the commune. Thanks to the abstention and not acting as a bloc, the right continues to govern the mayoralty of Estación Central “.

While, from the UDI, they celebrated the triumph of Abdo. Councilor Ivo Pavlovic highlighted his “Closeness to neighbors” and his “I work with citizens and social organizations “. Beatriz Lagos, meanwhile, appreciated that the municipality continues to be led by a union member.
