Chile keeps its borders open through the Santiago airport, which allows tourists to enter the country, but under certain conditions.
Since November, those who enter the country must have a negative PCR less than 72 hours old. In addition, they must make an affidavit, have health insurance and will be subject to a surveillance period of 14 days, so they must report their location and health conditions every 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Chileans and resident foreigners who arrive in the country must carry out 14-day mandatory quarantine, unless a negative PCR test is carried or the examination is carried out on national soil. They are also required to submit an affidavit and must submit to the traveler surveillance period.
This has generated debate, on all the last days with the appearance of a new strain of coronavirus in the United Kingdom, the one that is most contagious and that has spread to other countries in Europe. Given this, foreigners coming from the United Kingdom cannot enter the country.
The chancellor Andres Allamand He spoke about this issue with the Bío Bío Express, where he indicated that the reopening of the capital airport “was correct” since in his opinion “if we had the entire border open, the possibilities of control would be much less.”
Allamand defended the different conditions that are required to enter Chile, especially for foreigners, since this helps control possible sources of contagion.
“Obviously that the outside is a source of contagion it must be controlled ”, he declared.
Why can you travel abroad, but not to the rest of Chile?
Likewise, the Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that he does not see inconsistencies between allowing people to travel to or from Chile, but that within the country interregional trips cannot be made from or to areas in phase 2 of the Step by step plan.
“I don’t see the inconsistency, transfer difficulties they occur when there is a region that is in a not very advanced stage, in the sense that the virus is more widespread (…) It seems reasonable that there is no transfer to regions where the virus is more controlled ”, he said.
Given this, he insisted that in Chile there is protection of the situation since negative PCR is required from tourists and decisions have been made such as not accepting those who come from the UK.
“You have to take a equilibrium formula. Closing the borders for all intents and purposes also has negative consequences, “he added.
Finally, he indicated that “so far we have no record that this measure has generated a risk” and that “absolute closure also has detractors. Having a single place where all kinds of controls are carried out, seems reasonable to me, which is a correct measure ”.
