This Saturday, November 21 67 years of the city of Chile are commemorated, which, at the same time, is the southernmost in the world.

The history of Puerto Williams dates back to the early 1950s and its birth crystallized in November 1953, when by order of the Commander in Chief of the Third Naval Zone, Rear Admiral Ronald Mac-Intyre installed a naval station in Puerto Luisa, what would be the first bases for the establishment of the future city.

On that occasion, the national flag is raised for the first time and Lieutenant Commander Luis Mansilla inaugurates the first house in the city, in a ceremony attended by more than two hundred people. Among them were those who would be part of the first naval crew of Puerto Luisa, who later moved to the area with their families.

The geopolitical decision made in this area was based on the effective presence of the State in the Beagle Channel, and the projection of national development within the framework of the efforts made in the southern channels.

In 1956, Puerto Luisa changed its name to Puerto Williams, by means of a supreme decree of the Ministry of National Defense, in recognition of the work of the Irish frigate captain of that name. Juan Williams was the one who in 1843 took possession of the Strait of Magellan and developed the first settlements on the Brunswick Peninsula.

6,500 years of history in Puerto Williams

According to various archaeological investigations, the first settlements of Puerto Williams date back to 6,500 years ago, where abundant remains of food consumed by native peoples are appreciated and distinguished, such as shellfish, crustaceans, and even arrowheads, which indicates an old settlement of the sector.

Currently, Puerto Williams is the capital of the province of Cabo de Hornos, and the Jurisdiction of the Third Naval Zone specifies its presence through the Beagle Naval District with the deployment of different naval, maritime and air-naval facilities, which together they form a staff of civil servants and their families, who constitute 46% of the city’s population.

“Puerto Williams was founded by the Chilean Navy, has grown together with the Navy and will continue its future development supported by the Institution that gave it birth,” said the Commander-in-Chief of the Third Naval Zone, Rear Admiral Ronald Baasch Barberis, in the emotional celebration ceremony carried out in the remote sovereign enclave of our country, 3 thousand 596 kilometers from Santiago.
