Historic former Uruguayan captain and match against Chile: “The VAR was a disaster, it was a penalty” – La Roja

One of the historical players of the Uruguayan team is Diego Lugano, who was captain and played two World Cups with the Uruguayan team.

In conversation with Third, the ex-footballer referred to the recent duel between Chile and Uruguay, where there were controversies in arbitration and VAR.

Lugano was blunt in stating that “the VAR was a disaster” at the meeting.

Regarding the play not reviewed by Paraguayan referee Eber Aquino, the former captain stated that “it was criminal. With the VAR you cannot not charge. Here in Brazil the VAR has existed for three years and it is with a disaster too. It influences the result more than before. A disaster!”.

Regarding the video and audios released by the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) of the controversial play where the ball hit the Uruguayan defender Sebastián Coates’s hand, in the conversation the referees are heard acknowledging that the ball did indeed hit his limb.
