The president of the PPD, Heraldo Muñoz, announced this Monday that he will be a presidential candidate, but that he is ready to compete in primaries, whether internal, in a coalition or with the entire opposition.

“Effectively I have made the decision to run for the presidency of the Republic for my party and hopefully for the center left ”, Muñoz said in an interview with Emol.

The announcement by the former foreign minister comes a week after that made by Francisco Vidal, also a PPD activist and former minister of various portfolios during the governments of Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet.

For this reason, Muñoz maintained that he is willing to compete in the formula that his party deems appropriate, either in internal primaries or open to the entire opposition.

“That this is defined in some primary school with the idea of listening to the people, of listening to their demands rather than a statement of I am a candidate, rather to see how I can face the aspirations of so many people, particularly of the lower middle class, of the most vulnerable sectors, being by the way, my interest to eventually represent the whole country. But from a very clear middle-class perspective, ”he explained.

Along the same lines, he expressed that he finds it positive that Vidal has also shown his intentions to compete in the presidential election, indicating that at this time it is necessary that there be different views.

“It seems very good to me that others compete, it is part of democracy and that Francisco Vidal does so, it seems to me that it is in all his right. And if there are others, welcome, let a thousand flowers bloom ”, he said.

Finally, he emphasized that he prefers that the election be held through open primaries, but that he will respect if it is decided to do so through the National Council of the PPD.

“I call for the method to be through open primaries with citizen participation.
But I will be very respectful of the decision of my party in case a poll is decided, or that eventually it is the National Council itself, which according to the statutes is the one that must nominate a presidential candidate, ”he clarified.
