The deputies José Miguel Castro (RN) and Renzo Trisotti (UDI) requested this day to keep the borders of Chile closed until the bill on a new immigration law for health reasons is dispatched

“The situation throughout the north of the country is critical and there is no room for more. Stricter control measures must be taken urgently to avoid a health and safety crisis in our region, “said Castro.

“We hope that the borders will not be opened due to the health crisis due to Covid-19 in which we find ourselves,” added the RN legislator, who said that it is very important to understand that “the care centers and health residences will not be sufficient to contain all the people and that we have not even come out of quarantine in its entirety ”.

In this sense, Castro requested an urgent meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Allamand, which will take place this Monday, to formally request the Executive to close the borders and address the immigration situation.

For his part, Deputy Trisotti added that the situation in Iquique and the entire north of the country “is critical and there is no room for more. Stricter control measures must be taken to avoid health and safety crises in our region ”.

Before which, Castro added that “today a wave of Venezuelan immigrants is projected to cross into Chile when the northern border opens.”

The foregoing is generating a series of difficulties for regional governments and municipalities who are making efforts to contain this migratory wave, for which, in compliance with health regulations, they have had to implement dozens of temporary shelters to avoid the danger of spreading the disease. Covid-19. For example, in the city of Arica, 12 of them have had to be implemented and in Tarapacá work is being done to enable two new places to reach 11 and thus expand the capacities of the existing ones that are already fully occupied.

Finally, both parliamentarians agreed that action must be taken urgently. “The north of the country deserves measures that generate concrete results, and for this reason there must be clear and effective signs that migratory illegality cannot be tolerated. We request that our legislation be complied with and all illegal migrants be repatriated in order to take care and protect the health of our population, safeguard the borders and avoid the future collapse of our region, given the enormous projections of entry of foreigners that are expected in the next months ”, they concluded.
