257 days after the arrival of the pandemic in the country, and soon to be one year after the appearance of Covid-19 in the region of Wuhan and ChinaNot a few countries are already on the alert for the development of the first safe and effective vaccines against the virus. One of them is that of the Pfizer laboratory, which this week announced a 90% efficiency in the first of the three studies that the antidote must overcome.
Thus, and considering that Chile is one of the countries that have already signed a contract that would ensure 10 million doses (see pages 18, 19 and 20), the Undersecretary of Healthcare Networks, Alberto Dougnac, cleared up some doubts regarding how this would be applied. or other vaccines. “Depending on the type (of vaccine), we will implement the corresponding strategies. In principle, the first vaccine that would be available for application – in the groups to be determined a posteriori – uses the same logistics as that of AH1N1. Therefore, there is a lot of experience at the national level in its application ”, he explained.
In this sense, and taking into account the distrust that would exist in the population once it is ready to inoculate people, he was emphatic in emphasizing that “the vaccine that we are going to apply is safe and does not present risk for those who receive it.”
During the day, a new weekly report of deaths from Covid-19, prepared by the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS), reports that as of November 4, the number of deaths confirmed with coronavirus -that is, with a PCR test positive before death- reaches 14,777 people. Likewise, those who have been labeled as probable deaths by Covid-19, add another 5,005 people.
According to the same report, deaths in the context of a pandemic represent 18% of the total deaths registered during this year (109,624). In this line, and a month and a half after closing this year, 2020 is already positioned as the period with the most deaths in, at least, the last five years, according to public data from the DEIS.
Thus, during 2016 104,026 deaths were registered, while during 2019 the figure had risen to 109,361.
The epidemiologist and biostatistician of the University of Chile Gabriel Cavada explains that “in a normal year, without a pandemic, the main causes of death in Chile are cardiovascular diseases (ischemic heart diseases, hypertensive diseases, etc.) which, among all of them, add up to more than 20 thousand deaths per year. This measures the impact of the tragedy that Covid-19 has been in Chile: a single disease, a single pandemic, displaced the leading cause of death in the country. When we look at the calendar year of the epidemic, which falls on March 3, 2021, it is almost certain that confirmed and probable Covid-19 deaths will also rank as the leading cause of death. “
According to the epidemiological report, the regional capital of Los Lagos, Puerto Montt, was ranked as the commune with the highest number of active cases (464), beating Temuco (448), which in the previous report was in the lead. With almost 500 active cases, Puerto Montt registered an increase of 81 active cases compared to the last report. The Valdivia commune, on the other hand, surpassed Punta Arenas (359) in active cases (374), which in the last two months has experienced an intense outbreak.
At the national level, there are 28 communes that register more than 100 active cases and four of them are in the RM: Puente Alto, Maipú, Santiago and La Florida.
Regarding the daily report, Health reported 1,644 new cases, 39 deaths and 9,358 active cases.
