The day that Magallanes surpassed the Metropolitan Region in the number of new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the government requested the resignation of the regional mayor, José Fernández. This was confirmed by the Intendancy to Third.

Until now, the regional chief also addressed his departure with the local media The Magellanic, to whom he assured that “I have not submitted a resignation, they asked me ”.

Minutes after the news was known, the government, through a statement, rejected Fernández’s version, assuring that the regional authority “He submitted his resignation from the position he had held since February 13, 2019.”

In that sense, it was ensured that President Sebastián Piñera decided to appoint Jennifer Rojas García, the fourth authority to assume the highest regional position during the second government of the President.

“The new regional authority, which will take office on September 22, 2020, is a social worker from the University of Magallanes, has a diploma in Human Resources Management and Direction from the Mariano Egaña University and also a postgraduate degree in Social Mediation of Family Conflicts of the University of Chile ”, they indicated in the statement.

The departure of Fernández, meanwhile, occurs amid a rise in cases in the area. In fact, both the region and its two main cities -Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales- they registered figures above 800 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last epidemiological report, released last Saturday.

In addition, the region marked the second day with more infected -248- reported since the start of the pandemic, only surpassed by the number registered on September 12, when 262 Covid-19 positives were reported.
