The Government faces cross-cutting criticism after confirming its intention to postpone future elections for regional governors for seven months, from April 11 to November 21, 2021, to make them coincide with the next presidential, parliamentary and regional councilor elections (nuclei).

The proposal was promoted this Friday in a new session of the Mixed Commission, which was debating the bill that seeks to lift inabilities of the cores in the next elections, so that they can be candidates for Congress, after the approval of the rule that establishes a limit to re-election.

The president of the Senate, Adriana muñoz (PPD), pointed to Cooperative that “it seems to me that it is not adequate (…) There is an agreement, there is an itinerary and to seek to change the dates of the election of governors, I seem to be with a calculator in hand and especially in the framework of an initiative, a process that is for a very different purpose“.

In the Mixed Commission sometimes indications can be presented, reach an agreement; the mixed one has that sense. But when something does not have to do with the matrix ideas it is something more complex (…) That is inadmissible“, clarified the senator.

He National Council of Christian Democracy issued a public statement rejecting “any attempt – and under any pretext – to postpone” the election of governors.

“The regions need more autonomy, more resources, and that is our commitment. I call on the Government to present the projects that improve that, but in no case will we be available to delay an election that is already defined, and that especially in this pandemic it is shown that stronger regions and real decentralization are needed ” , held the deputy Joanna Pérez, one of the vice presidents of the DC.

Regionalist bench was against

The senator Juan Castro (RN), from the regionalist bench of Chile Vamos, noted that they are not willing to postpone the elections.

“What we as a regionalist bench will not allow the Government is to change the date of the election of regional governors (…) The Government is getting skilled and is mixing two issues that have nothing to do with“, assured Castro.

“The Government is joining two things to be able to pressure us and achieve its objective,” added the legislator, assuring: “We do not agree. What we want is for the election to regional governors to take place“.

Monckeberg’s clarification

The Minister of the Segpres, Christian Monckeberg, came up against criticism, clarifying that the objective of the Government is to open the debate.

“No one here is raising a crime, here what we are doing is debating ideas and that smells very good, so I want to make it very clear, because It does not seem reasonable or responsible to me that they come to state that we are doing things that are not related to transparency, with a high-minded debate and in a correct manner, “the minister clarified.

“The legislative technique must be sought, this is not an indication that we have presented, is a ‘collect opinions‘(…) Later we will see if this walks or not“, he assured.

For next Monday at 6:00 p.m. a new session of the mixed commission was set, where the form and substance of the new Executive proposal will be analyzed: the instance will pronounce itself and decide whether to vote until full dispatch both projects or only the one who raises the disabilities to the cores.
