During this Tuesday, the Government Spokesperson, Jaime Bellolio, launched the Guide to Competitive Funds 2020-2021, an opportunity where he referred to the second AFP withdrawal of funds that is currently being processed in the Senate, noting on the occasion that as an Executive they do not rule out the presentation of their own project for said purposes.
Bellolio said that as a Government they understand “that there are millions of people who have had a very bad time in the pandemic, who have seen their income lowered, who have seen their jobs lost, that is why the focus of the Government has been first, to get out of the pandemic. Second, the recovery of jobs ”.
“If we continue to remove more people from the pension system that makes it incompatible that we can have good pensions in the future”, Held.
He also said that “the first withdrawal meant, in a different context in the country, that two million people were left without pension funds. If that happens again, it means that another two million people will be left without pension funds ”.
“One of the things that is being discussed, the senators of Chile Vamos requested it yesterday (Monday), is that the Government itself can present a project, for example, of a 10% withdrawal that is more limited, that does include a tax to those high-income people “he declared.
Along these lines, he mentioned that “it does not seem reasonable that all Chileans have to pay people with higher incomes a subsidy that also takes out these pension funds, when today we have fundamental emergencies in the most vulnerable people.”
“The focus will be on that, it will be on the aid that is necessary for the most vulnerable people., in recovering jobs and getting out of the pandemic well because it has not ended yet, “he said.
He added that the presentation of a project by the Executive for a second withdrawal of funds is not ruled out, adding that “It is something that the Government is evaluating, we are talking both with the senators of Chile Vamos and with the opposition senators”.
“We are interested in respecting the rules of the game and not making more constitutional circumvention, as has unfortunately become a common practice through, above all, the Chamber of Deputies,” he said.
Bellolio’s statements They come after the words of President Sebastián Piñera at the Annual Industry Meeting, organized by Sofofa, where he issued a harsh criticism of parliamentarians, and although he did not say it directly, it would be a clear allusion to the second withdrawal of 10% of the AFP funds, as well as the initiative to change the quorum in the constituent convention.
“What we are seeing today is that a group of parliamentarians making abusive use of a loophole, a constitutional circumvention, are trying to write a parallel Constitution without modifying the current Constitution, through transitory articles,” he said at the time.
Later, the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, confirmed that they could appeal to the Constitutional Court if the bill that is currently being processed in the Senate persists.
“Here what corresponds is this type of situation to treat them through institutional means. If that is not possible, of course the Executive has the duty to ensure respect and watch over our institutionality, because it is a fundamental pillar for our democracy ”, declared the minister.
