This Wednesday, amid the explosive increase in the spread of coronavirus in the country, the government decreed quarantine for 38 communes of the Metropolitan Region, which implies that 73% of the region will be in confinement.
In the last 24 hours they were reported as positive 2,660 people, a record number since the pandemic began and which represents a 60% increase compared to the previous day. Also registered 12 deceased.
In this context, the Minister of Health, Jaime Mañalich, announced a series of measures that he described as “Extremely harsh” and recognized that “they represent a sacrifice, they have very important adverse effects and what is relevant is that these measures are respected as much as possible so that they produce their impact in the shortest possible time ”. These They will come into force at 10:00 pm on Friday, May 15.
In this line, Mañalich explained that “The most severe measure I must announce is a total quarantine in Greater Santiago. This implies to all those communes that are part of the province of Santiago which are 32 communes and, in addition, outside the province, another 6 that have a close relationship with the city of Santiago“
The province of Santiago is made up of: Santiago, Vitacura, San Ramón, San Miguel, San Joaquín, Renca, Recoleta, Quinta Normal, Quilicura, Pudahuel, Providencia, Peñalolén, Pedro Aguirre Cerda, Ñuñoa, Maipú, Macul, Lo Prado, Lo Espejo, Lo Barnechea, Las Condes, La Reina, La Pintana, La Granja, La Florida, La Cisterna, Independencia, Huechuraba, Central Station, El Bosque, Conchalí, Cerro Navia and Cerrillos.
In addition, the measure will apply to those that are part of the so-called “Urban Santiago”, group formed by San Bernardo, Buin, Padre Hurtado, Puente Alto, Lampa and Colina.
“Also around this great ring where practically 8 million people live, a sanitary customs office will be imposed to limit the exits that do not have to do with the provision of food and work from the quarantined communes to other regions”Mañalich added.
Along with the above, outside the Metropolitan Region, the confinement for the communes of Iquique and Alto Hospicio, and settled a sanitary cord for San Antonio.
In addition, the mandatory quarantine -originally decreed for people over 80 years old- will now apply to all adults over the age of 75.
