The Government decreed a total quarantine for 38 communes in the Metropolitan region due to the sharp increase in positive cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus reported in the latest balance.
As reported by Minister Jaime Mañalich, the measure will take effect from 22:00 on this Friday, May 15 throughout the province of Santiago plus six other communes that are adjacent to it, such as San Bernardo, Buin, Lampa , Puente Alto, Colina and Padre Hurtado.
“We are going to announce new extremely tough measures. What is relevant is that these measures are respected as much as possible, so that they have an impact in the short term”, said the secretary of state.
Mañalich, asked about the reasons for not taking the measure in advance, said that “You have to take the right measures, at the right time. Having a national quarantine at a time when there were very few cases made no sense. The harm would have outweighed the benefits.”

The minister also indicated that there is good news, “such as the quarantine of the urban area of Arica and the communes of Angol and Victoria,” in the La Araucanía region.
“These measures must be taken to avoid the risk that more people are hospitalized and so that this focus in Greater Santiago does not mean a spread to other areas.”
“Citizens must have full collaboration for these actions”
