Government announced extension of the State of Catastrophe for National Holidays

He Minister of the Interior, Víctor Pérez, announced in Cooperativa that President Sebastián Piñera will renew the constitutional state of exception of catastrophe which has been in force in Chile since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new extension, which will be for approximately 10 days from September 14, is intended to allow the curfew to govern during the National Holidays, to avoid negative consequences regarding the pandemic and with a view to the constitutional plebiscite of October 25, he explained in The Cooperative Diary.

“We have a concern in National Holidays and as we want the plebiscite to be as safe as possible, all the experts and indicators show that special care must be taken during National Holidays to avoid important outbreaks; we all know how Chileans like it celebrate National Holidays “, he explained.

And in that frame, “we have a democratic process to take care of”, he claimed.

The President decreed a state of catastrophe nationwide for 90 days on March 18th, a few weeks after confirming the first case of Covid-19 in Chile, and once the period has expired, the June 16 spread it out for the same number of days.

Pérez confirmed the decision after being consulted by a previous announcement by the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris, who reported that the curfew, which currently lasts between 11:00 p.m. and ends at 5:00 a.m., will be advanced during celebrations and will begin at 9:00 p.m.
