The General Director of the Carabineros, Mario Rozas, left his post after two minors, one 17 and the other 14, suffered gunshot wounds from the action of institution officials at a Sename center in Talcahuano.
Rozas presented his resignation this Thursday after both the opposition and the ruling party deputies demanded that he step aside.
During the morning, President Sebastián Piñera met with the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, the Minister of Justice, Hernán Larraín, and Rozas himself.
After the meeting, the president said that Rozas had communicated his reasons to him: “I share the reasons and arguments of General Rozas, and consequently I have accepted your resignation”.
Furthermore, he stated that he has “The greatest appreciation, admiration and gratitude for the work that General Rozas has accomplished”.

On the other hand, the president confirmed that General Ricardo Yanez, who until today served as deputy director of the Carabineros, will be in charge of assuming the general direction of the institution.
The departure of Rozas was demanded by the opposition from the October 2019 social outbreak within the framework of Human Rights violations. His figure received new questions in October 2020, when a 16-year-old teenager fell into the Mapocho river after being hit by a uniformed man.
