A keeper at the Madrid zoo was seriously injured by a gorilla this Sunday, according to El País. The 46-year-old woman had to be transferred to the hospital for various trauma caused by the gorilla when she entered her cage at around 10.15 in the morning.

The gorilla, 29, named Malabo, was about to eat his breakfast and, seeing himself surprised, pounced on her. “He shook her, but without using all the enormous strength of which he is capable with his 200 kilos of weight”, they explained from the zoo to EFE.

The keepers immediately went to the cage and they drove the animal away with the smoke from the fire extinguishers. After that, they calmed the gorilla with a dart

The zoo points out that this was a mistake by the caretaker due to the “surprise” that Malabo took when he saw his caretaker when he was getting ready to eat his food.

The head of the Madrid Civil Protection guard, Ángel Casas, reported that “upon our arrival the patient found herself with (…) traumatic brain injury, thoracic trauma, with multiple fractures of the thorax (..) and open fractures of the upper limbs”.

“Malabo”, a coastal gorilla, was raised in the Madrid Zoo and is “much loved” by its keepers, explained the zoo spokeswoman, who has reiterated the wishes of a speedy recovery for the injured worker. At the moment, the gorilla facility is closed to the public.
