The Presidency of the Republic confirmed this morning the appointment of the Army Major General, Javier Eduardo Iturriaga Del Campo, as the new Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (EMCO), one of the key positions of National Defense.
Iturriaga was head of the National Defense in the Metropolitan Region during the social outbreak after October 18, a position in which he stood out for lowering the bellicose tone of the statements that La Moneda made in the context of social revolt.
In fact, the day after President Piñera dispatched the phrase “we are at war against a powerful enemy”, General Iturriaga was consulted about it and replied that “I am a happy man, the truth is that I am not at war with nobody “, a phrase that did not go down well in La Moneda.
During his tenure as head of National Defense, Iturriaga tried to calm down in a context of social crisis, even appealing to the media to “spread tranquility to the population, go to work, carry out normal activities.”
After the end of the state of emergency, the officer resumed his work as Commander of Education and Doctrine of the Army in La Reina, which he continues to do today.
His work during the outbreak was well evaluated in the Government. “He fulfilled what is expected of a military man. He did it with sobriety, with command, with closeness to his men and with the conviction that his mission was to return the country to normality. That was absolutely accomplished,” he said at the time. to Third the then Minister of Defense, Alberto Espina.
