“I am in favor of the Christian Democracy defining its presidential candidacy through a democratic and fraternal competition”, said this Saturday the president of the party, Fuad Chahin.
At 9:30 am today the National Board of the community began, which covered, among other issues, the electoral challenges that come for the next few months. In this context, in addition, a panel was held by Senator Ximena Rincón and former Minister Alberto Undurraga, who have expressed their willingness to compete to be the party’s presidential card.
In the instance, both proposed that the DC hold internal primaries – either in December or January – to choose the candidate for the 2021 elections.
“Together with Alberto, we have made available a political vote – which we hope will be ratified by the Board – that what he intends is that open primaries be held between the months of December and January to elect the presidential option of the Christian Democrats. We believe that it is a good democratic exercise and it also allows us to present our vision to the country “said the parliamentarian.
Undurraga, meanwhile, added that the idea is that whoever wins this “initial” election, can then participate “in a primary as broad as possible of the opposition, subject to a common program.”
Asked about this idea, Chahin assured that he defends a “democratic and fraternal competition. That is the formula in which we have to define our leadership, and I undoubtedly hope that as a party we can support a proposal of that nature “.
Likewise, the senator was invited to participate in the panel Francisco Huenchumilla -who has also been open to the possibility of being a candidate-, but was finally removed from the instance.
The parliamentarian has established certain conditions of unity to assume the presidential challenge and would not be in favor of holding primaries in the framework of the pandemic.
To justify his absence from the panel, the senator for La Araucanía sent a letter to Chahin explaining that “I must decline the invitation because I do not have the quality of presidential candidate, a decision that I respect in Ximena (Rincón) and Alberto (Undurraga), but that is not my case.” To add: “I have indicated that I open myself to that possibility, but as long as there is a unitary party leadership that involves all sectors of the party.”
“It seems to me that their position is very legitimate, but the party’s Board is also sovereign and our militants will be able to decide the moment and the mechanism to be able to choose the DC presidential candidate “Chahin said about it.
Alluding, meanwhile, to the parliamentary’s call for “unity”, the president of the DC stated that “Unity is not synonymous with lack of competence. The unity is that when there is competition, it is fraternal and, after the competition, everyone gets behind the winner “.
On the other hand, the National Board supported – by 307 votes (97.77%) – the possibility that the DC participate in a primary for the nomination of candidates for the positions of regional governors and mayors.
“We have stated that the primary elections are an irreplaceable mechanism for the elections of mayors and regional governors. We have done it without any veto and without any exclusions “, assured the president of the DC.
In that line he qualified as “It is an enormous irresponsibility to allow a victory for Chile Vamos as a result of the dispersion of the opposition forces.”
