The Government spokesperson, Karla Rubilar, announced that La Moneda quarantined 48 people. Reason? They had contact with the press professional who today tested positive for covid-19. The professional until today carried out reporting tasks in the presidential palace.
The usual press teams that are accredited by the different media were quarantined. A total of 14 days of isolation. They will be replaced by other officials.
High authorities would not be infected
Rubilar assured that neither President Sebastián Piñera, nor the First Lady, Cecilia Morel, nor ministers or government authorities had contact with the infected person.
“In the case of the press professional who was released, he felt bad on Friday,” said Rubilar. The spokeswoman said that the exam was performed on Monday, testing positive today. “For that reason, the decision has been made to quarantine all those who have been his close contacts,” said the minister. “And also to their indirect contacts and they could have some type of risk,” he said.
48 people in total
The quarantine order does not only involve journalists. The head of the General Secretariat of Government specified that “this uprising we did with the press teams that report in La Moneda.”
“And that is why we are going to quarantine 48 officials who had a relationship with this person who tested positive,” he explained. The minister also explained the step by step of the protocol.
He pointed out that although the PCR examination of these 48 contacts was negative, they will remain in quarantine for 14 days. Direct and indirect contacts are considered. That is to say, they are asked for a total quarantine before returning to the palace to carry out their usual tasks.
“In order to ensure that access to information is maintained,” he explained, “we have generated with the different media a change in the people who were working here in La Moneda daily by other teams of reporters from those media,” he explained. Additionally, he pointed out that measures will be taken to avoid contagions while carrying out their tasks.

In addition, a special press room was established in the Patio de los Cañones. It has greater separations, screen and gooseneck microphones. Along with that, La Moneda ordered to reduce the number of accredited press teams. The room used by reporters, known as “La Copucha”, was also sanitized.
Regarding the situation of the President and his cabinet, Rubilar assured that “every time we have a positive case, we make an epidemiological map.” “We determine who are the close contacts and see who are those who are at risk of having become infected with that person,” he explained.
In the specific case of all the first infections that have occurred in La Moneda, that is, palace guards, an official from the Citizen Management division and now with the press professional, it was established that they have had no contact with the authorities or with the President or the First Lady. “Therefore, in this particular case there is no risk that the person who is positive today has infected the President or the First Lady,” Rubilar concluded.
