At least four officers died and eight were injured during a confrontation between the Haitian National Police and a powerful armed gang during an operation that took place this Friday in Village De Dieu, at the southern entrance of Port-au-Prince, according to the official balance offered this Saturday.

“The Police will not back down”said the general director of the institution, Leon Charles, during a press conference offered today to report on the operation.

Members of the band known as “5 seconds”, which have turned Village De Dieu into a lawless zone, seized various materials from the agents, including various weapons.

The Director General of the Police asked the members of the body to show solidarity and promised that the command will accompany the families of the fallen officers during the operation.

Various videos, some of great harshness, circulate on social networks, images that show at least two of the murdered policemen, whose bodies they are the object of cruelty by bandits, who continue to shoot at the lifeless bodies, in exchange for which they ask for large sums of money.

The audiovisuals and dozens of photographs circulating on social networks have generated outrage among the Haitian population, who have asked the resignation of the authorities after the bloody event.

This is at least the third time that the police have run an operation to evict the bandits from Village de Dieu, which has ended in failure.

Haitian President Jovenel Moise expressed his outrage at the deaths of the police officers in a speech delivered through social media, in which called the agents heroes and sent his condolences to the more than 14,000 police officers that make up the institution.

The president described the situation as “disgusting” and threatened to respond against the responsible gangs: “Lords of Village De Dieu, make arrangements. We go for you. Be that as it may, we are going for you ”, he said.

For years, the southern part of the capital has become one of the most dangerous places in Port au Prince, where gangs operate terrorizing the population.

Last year, the government even threatened to invade that area by force, but the operation was aborted after human rights organizations warned of the danger that the intervention would entail for the civilian population.
