The creator of a Russian vaccine against covid-19 said on Wednesday that it is 92% effective, days after the American Pfizer and german BioNTech They will announce that the one they are developing is 90% effective.

Like its competitors, the Russian Sovereign Fund (RDIF) and the Gamaleya research institute highlighted in a statement the efficacy of the vaccine Sputnik-V, currently in phase 3 of double-blind randomized clinical trials -a type of experiment used in various disciplines-, carried out with 40,000 volunteers.

“The statistical analysis of 20 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, cases distributed between vaccinated people and others who received placebo, indicate a level of effectiveness of 92% of the Sputnik-V vaccine after a second dose,” according to the document.

Until now, Russia has been very suspicious when sharing scientific documentation on this vaccine, praised by President Vladimir Putin, but this Wednesday the creators of Sputnik-V assured that the research will be published shortly “in one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed medical journals

The RDIF also stated that it would provide all the necessary data to the national regulators of the countries that want to buy Sputnik-V.

It is a “viral vector” vaccine that uses as a vector in two injections two adenoviruses (very common viruses responsible, for example, for colds), transformed to add a part of the person responsible for covid-19.

When the modified adenovirus enters the cells of vaccinated people, the latter make a typical SARS-CoV-2 protein, causing their immune system to recognize it and fight it, according to the Gamaleya Institute.

In August, Russia already announced that Sputnik-V was effective, even before large-scale clinical trials were carried out, which raised doubts in the international scientific community.

Wednesday’s announcement came after Pfizer and BioNTech indicated that the vaccine they are developing is 90% effective.

Even so, this product also raises important doubts regarding the durability of its protection and the logistical challenges it may cause.
