It was June 2018 when a cargo ship accidentally dropped a total of 81 containers off the coast of Australia.
Since then, containers have remained under water, about 25 kilometers off the coast of the Australian city of Newcastle. However, they have been recently restored.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) found two North American Chevrolet Silverado pickups in two salvaged containers that had been under water for 22 months.
These two Chevrolet trucks were exported from the United States to the Australian market, where they would have received full transition to right-hand drive to meet country standards.
It is clear that they are not in a condition that they should have come to Australia. “The 120-meter free fall into the water and then landing at the bottom did not leave them in great shape,” explains Scott Wilson, AMSA project manager.
“All the windows were closed, so they were full of water and rotted,” he added.
There are already workers who are engaged in the restoration of these vehicles with special personal protective equipment. They assured that the smell coming from the containers was “just awful.”
