This day, President Sebastián Piñera promulgated the law that gives special access to pension savings to people who are in the terminal phase of an illness, an initiative that was presented by the Executive and that yesterday was dispatched from Congress.

Via telematics, due to the preventive quarantine that must be met due to being in close contact with a person with covid-19, the president stressed that those with a diagnosis of serious health condition or with a life expectancy of 12 months will be considered terminally ill .

“This freely available surplus, which may be withdrawn by the terminally ill, will be calculated after provisioning the necessary resources to finance for 12 months a basic income equivalent to the Basic Solidarity Pension (PBS), the mortuary fee and survivorship pensions when appropriate, “he said.

How does the withdrawal of funds for the terminally ill operate?

In reality it is not a withdrawal like the 10%, but it is a recalculation of the pension that corresponds to the contribution you made and that is with a terminal diagnosis.

What is done, in practice, is that the amount saved in the AFP is taken and distributed in 12 installments, as temporary income.

Prior to that, in any case, a reserve of money is made to pay a mortuary fee (15 UF) and survivor pensions, when applicable.

If the contributor decides to receive the lowest monthly payment, the equivalent of the Basic Solidarity Pension for people over 80 years of age, he will be able to receive the remaining amount of the saved in a single installment.
