The director of Internal Revenue Service (SII), Fernando Barraza, was urgently summoned to the Finance Commission of the Chamber of Deputies which will meet this Wednesday afternoon.
In the instance, the head of the agency must explain the $ 1,400 million in taxes that were reduced to Grupo Penta, which was described as “scandalous” by some deputies.
The company was involved between 2015 and 2019 in cases for tax crimes and irregular financing of the policy, in investigations that ended in convictions for its drivers Carlos Eugenio Lavín and Carlos Délano.
The president of the aforementioned commission, communist deputy Daniel Núñez, summoned the Minister of Finance, Ignacio Briones, to pronounce on the situation that he described as “A prize for corruption”.
As revealed by CIPER, the economic group sanctioned for evading taxes, He resorted to the SII so that the money paid to his lawyers during the legal proceedings were considered a “necessary expense”, which allowed him a multimillion-dollar tax cut.
In this context, Congressman Núñez said that it becomes untenable for Barraza to continue in office, for which he demands his resignation.
“This is absolutely intolerable and outrageous, because it is making a tax cut of 1,400 million pesos to the Penta group, that is to say, today the Government (…) -because the SII depends on the Ministry of Finance- are endorsing and rewarding the corruption of the Penta group ”, said the deputy, assuring that he will use his powers to prevent events like these from being repeated.
“It is evident that the legal defense of an economic group that is being criminally sentenced, such as the Penta group, cannot be considered a necessary expense to produce income or its normal activity, and it is like I reward those who cheat the Treasury. This warrants a complete review of the logic with which the Ministry of Finance acts ”, added the deputy.
Meanwhile, the deputy of Democratic Revolution (RD), Giorgio Jackson, stated that “it is a scandal that the owners of Penta, who were convicted of fraud by the Treasury and starred in one of the most emblematic cases of corruption in politics in recent years by financing one of the leading parties of the ruling party, receive these benefits ”.
“It makes no sense and it is outrageous because what SMEs and neighborhood businesses receive as daily treatment when facing the SII is diametrically opposite to what ends up being with those who financed political parties avoiding paying taxes. I would like to know what the Penta bench says about this totally unfair decision, and of course that the SII and the Treasury must give explanations ”, remarked the broad front.
