The numbers don’t lie and they are relentless. According to Mineduc data, 180,000 students drop out in a normal year. So far in the pandemic, 264,000 have done so. To make matters worse, if you add students from rural and urban areas, from the C1, C2 and DE socioeconomic segments, over 50% do not have connectivity. This means that the digital divide has doubled as before.
With this information in hand, Fundación Desafío Levantemos Chile institution decided to develop an instance to raise funds to help reduce this gap thanks to the delivery of tablets with access to the web. But they will not do it alone, because they will have the support of musicians such as Sebastián Yatra, Denise Rosenthal, Raphael, David Bisbal, Cami, Danna Paola, Luciano Pereyra, Javiera Mena, Morat, Christian Nodal, Pablo Lopez, Cali and El Dandee, Santa Feria and Distracted Morale.
All of them will be part of Desafío Play x Chile, a musical event that will be broadcast by TVN. “We want to invite all the people who tune in to the festival to contribute what they can to improve the future of the children of our country, by donating through our website www.desafiolevantemoschile.cl, details Nicolás Birrell, executive director of Desafío Levantemos Chile and adds, “We are very grateful for the commitment of the artists and sponsors to join the Play X Chile Challenge and thus be able to deliver tablets with internet connection to thousands of children who today do not have these tools for their education.” .
“Pandemic” format
Javiera Mena is one of the local artists who have joined this initiative. According to the singer, this is a presentation in “‘pandemic format’, in which I am performing alone. It is something that comes very natural to me because before I had done it after the pandemic. My music is electronic and I’ve been able to bring that out.
Regarding what motivated her to participate, Mena explains: “All the invitations that have been made to me in the pandemic that have a beneficial purpose for me are received in a very special way. Obviously, we are all supporting each other in different ways due to the pandemic So it is super nice what I can feel with what they are doing in Desafío Play x Chile and I think all the artists feel the same “.
It will be seen on TVN
Karen Doggenweiler and Gino Costa will host the event that TVN will broadcast this Saturday in prime time.
The animator says: “It is a beautiful initiative that we love to be part of because it allows us to provide technological tools and connectivity to students who need it, since this pandemic considerably increased school dropouts.” In addition to highlighting the role of TVN, he explains that he believes that actions of this type are very valuable. “There is a virtuous mix of listening to good music, there are great artists, enjoying their performances and also being able to help,” he says.
For Costa, the event focuses on something that few do, such as the digital divide in children. “I think that even a serious global phenomenon like the pandemic should not hinder their educational development,” he says.
Regarding the event, he adds: “Music is the protagonist, but so is the fact that children can learn despite the global context we are experiencing. Being given tablets with the internet helps to ensure that this is not a lost year.
