Farmers protested at the Route 68, in the Panguiles sector, in the direction of Valparaíso, by the economic losses generated by the lack of water due to the collapse of the Las Mercedes canal.
The lack of supply lasted for just over three months, until today flow partially resumed that supplies irrigation water to about 16 thousand hectares of María Pinto and Curacaví.
Although the Ministry of Agriculture announced a Emergency Fund for 2,500 million pesos to help 1,108 fruit and vegetable growers, those affected accuse that no one is responsible for the economic losses generated.
Therefore, to express their discontent, they demonstrated on Route 68 so that the authorities could deliver a concrete response to their demands.
Alvaro Valladares, representative of the farmers of Ibacache Alto, explained that his request is that President Sebastián Piñera decree a State of Catastrophe in the area. “It doesn’t matter if they give us water because the losses are total, we don’t have to irrigate, everything has already dried up ”, assured.
Another question is that the aid announced by the Government is aimed at those who are in Indap and in Curacaví there are many who would be left out.
As reported, the call brought together more than 300 farmers and announced that they will continue to mobilize.
