The farmer and former candidate for senator for the Region of La Araucanía Orwal Casanova Cameron died this Thursday after being shot in the face during the morning in the commune of Victoria, amid the escalation of rural violence in the area.
Casanova’s death occurred in the middle of an incident in the rural sector of Selva Oscura, reported the Malleco Farmers Association.
In 1993 Orwal Casanova was a candidate for senator for La Araucanía Norte in 1993, as an independent on the list of the Union for Progress of Chile (the then name of Chile Vamos).
In 1997, also as an independent on the right-wing list, he was a candidate for deputy for the 49th district, which included the provinces of Malleco and Cautín.
From the political world, the local bench of deputies of the UDI regretted the “cruel murder” de Casanova, remembering him as someone who “stood out for being an active defender of justice, which he defended with deep conviction at all times.”

The Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado (UDI), condemned Casanova’s crime: “Does someone win with a destroyed family? Does someone win with one less life in La Araucanía? Does someone win with that level of violence? Of course not. Absolutely no one wins with this type of event, “said the chief of staff from La Moneda.
“What one would like is to advance in the matter of dialogue, but unfortunately one often encounters acts of violence that make one rethink everythingBecause no event can occur linked to solving a problem that is related to violence, a bullet, a death, whichever side it is, whoever the person and whatever institution is, “he emphasized.
Delgado added that “what is happening is regrettable and, of course, it makes us rethink many things with respect to how to continue advancing in La Araucanía.”
The senator Carmen Gloria Aravena (ex Evópoli) regretted “another victim murdered in La Araucanía, the Government does not put on its pants, the strategy they designed is a complete failure.
