The Court of San Miguel heard this Saturday the allegations of appeal of the precautionary measures and revoked the preventive detention decreed against the former police officer Patricio Maturana, accused of the crime of very serious injuries against Fabiola Campillai.
By two votes to one, it was decided to accept the appeal presented by the defense of the accused. In this way, the detainee will go to total house arrest and national roots, measures less burdensome than the one originally issued.
The National Institute of Human Rights stated that “it regrets the decision of the Illustrious Court of Appeals of San Miguel, which revoked the precautionary measure of preventive detention for the accused for the crime of extremely serious injuries against Fabiola Campillai. The Institute will continue its efforts so that there is truth and justice ”.
Campillai lost her sight after being hit by a tear gas canister in her face on November 26, 2019 in the commune of San Bernardo, in the context of the so-called social outbreak.
The former captain was arrested in Curicó by the PDI’s Human Rights Brigade and previously, in mid-August, he was discharged after an administrative summary carried out in the Carabineros where it was established that the cash did not help the woman after receiving the impact. .
During the hearing in which Maturana was formalized, the High Complexity prosecutor, Paola Zárate, explained that the officer – contrary to the instructions of the public order manual – fired straight ahead and directed it directly at the people who were demonstrating in the place.
