The academic of Agronomy of the Universidad Mayor, Isabel del Real, referred this Tuesday to the increase in moths that has been seen in recent times in different parts of Chile.

In conversation with 24 Horas, the expert indicated that “this year there is an increase in density compared to previous years, but it is not such a significant increase.”

“But obviously they are more noticeable when they enter the houses attracted by the light and we observe their presence,” he said.

Regarding the size of the moths, where users of social networks have highlighted the presence of some larger than normal, he specified that “there are some species that are larger in size, but they are the least.”

“Most of the moths we are going to see are small in size, between 1 and 3.5 centimeters,” he said.

Regarding the importance of lepidoptera, he stressed that “their main ecological role has to do with pollination”, for which he made a call not to kill them.

“What we see are the adults that generally feed on the pollen of the flowers, the nectar of the flowers and what causes us damage are the larval stages that are the ones that feed either on plants or in the case of those that they are living inside the houses that we can find feeding on, for example, the products we have in the pantry or on our clothes. But the ecological role that they have is very important, “he said.

Finally, the expert pointed out that the moths “do not cause any harm to people, beyond what they can cause in our stored products and in our clothes”, adding that “they are insects that do not represent any threat to the health of the people”.
